US Sailing Advanced Sabot Clinic and Regatta
DPYC’s John Erlinger and Teddy Carter ventured north with coaches/parents Art Carter and Pepper Erlinger to the US Sailing Center in Long Beach for the US Sailing Advanced Sabot Clinic on June 6th & 7th. The clinic was offered to participants that competed in the 2008 Sabot Nationals in preparation for the upcoming 2009 Sabot Nationals at ABYC in August. The boys were selected after completing a short essay on “Why they wanted to attend the BASC clinic?”
The two day clinic was filled with coach tips and lots of on-the water practice in Alamitos Bay. The attendees were divided into A, B and C fleets and were coached by past National Sabot Champions and premier sailing coaches. The intense two day clinic was concluded with a set of 4 races. Teddy and John wrapped up a long weekend by placing 2nd and 5th accordingly out of their respective group of 35 or so boaters. John said, “This really gave me a lot of focus to take into the DPYC summer sessions and now I know exactly what I need to practice.” John also went on to say, “The coolest thing they told us was how to work with the specific tides and wind patterns in the area since the apartment and hotel buildings provide a very unique situation to Alamitos Bay.” Both Teddy and John will be attending the DPYC Jr. Sailing Program this summer. Both boys are very excited to continue to grow in their sailing ability and we look for big things to come from each of them in the upcoming summer racing season.

Cameron Baxter wins Festival of Whales Jr. Charity Regatta
Cameron Baxter worked the shifts in light and fluky conditions, edging out Danielle Sams and Mason Shaw in Sabot A Fleet to win the coveted Crystal Festival of Whales Trophy for 2009.
Full Report by Carolyn Foulston
Although, David Bolton’s jovial personality was not around to guide everyone, many others stepped up to the plate (or should I say stepped out on the dock?) to ensure that DPYC’s Festival of Whales Jr. Charity Regatta was a resounding success! The initial signs were a bit concerning . . . weather overcast, many out of harbor sailors unable to attend, confusion with new online registration but with the enthusiastic and dedicated group that DPYC attracts, all issues were sorted, dealt with and everyone had a terrific time. DWYC’s dedicated coach and leader, Janine Conners did a terrific job of running the inside Sabot course. Our talented Jeremy Quinton was PRO and ran the outside Sabot and Laser courses. The Laser/Radial participation was our highest yet – eleven sailors competed and patiently dealt with frustrating and changing conditions. The first race was cancelled just as one of the Hays girls was ready to round the first mark with the majority of the pack far, far, behind. Jeremy boldly took
the decision to restart it after spotting a strong wind line quickly moving towards the heretofore glassy course. He recognized it would quickly carry all the lagging sailors forward, thereby disadvantaging the leading racers who had worked so hard to be at the head of the pack. Many thanks go to Antoon and Rita Goedeke & Ken and Janet Silver, who cheerfully took the spectator parents out on their boats to watch their kids racing. They cheerfully went without lunch to ensure that no racer went hungry and helped shield the racers from boaters exiting the harbor by hovering on the perimeters. Thanks also to Sean Prestridge who came out on one of the Sea Scout skiffs to assist wherever he was needed; taking a motion-challenged mom back to the harbor and finding a few more sandwiches to feed the hungry troops. After the racing, the winners were delighted with the stunning trophies designed and produced by Toni Aninag of icanvasprints. Cameron Baxter was delighted to kiss the gorgeous crystal Perpetual trophy
that he won as the top Sabot sailor. After the awards, a happy group of sailors and parents enjoyed the culinary grill talents of Matthew Foulston who had Rick Sams as his new protégé. The fun continued with make your own sundaes, a resounding success . . . ask Tony Hays seen dipping in for a third serving! The new tradition of post-regatta hide and seek had even the teens involved as the parents relaxed over that final evening drink. It wouldn’t have been such a success without all the volunteers dedicating their time and patience.
PS: One racer who sails out of Newport Harbor told his parents that not only did he have a great time, but that he couldn’t believe how friendly and welcoming EVERYONE was at our event. Keep up the great work DPYC!!
