Junior Sailing Instructors, Assistants & Counselors In Training

The Dana Point Yacht Club is always looking for young people to fill the roles of Junior Sailing Instructors, Assistant Instructors and our newest program, Counselors in Training.

Counselor-in-Training (CIT) Program
DPYC's CIT Program is designed for motivated young sailors ready to develop leadership skills, gain teaching experience, and take the next step in their sailing journey.

Program Overview
CITs work closely with instructors to support daily camp operations, including rigging boats, organizing equipment, maintaining dock areas, and assisting with safe on-water activities. Participants gain hands-on experience while building confidence, communication, teamwork, and leadership skills.

Pathway to Advancement
The CIT Program is a steppingstone toward:
  • Junior Assistant Instructor roles (typically age 16+)
  • US Sailing or Accredited Sailing School Instructor Certification
  • Safe Motorboating Certification & CA Boater Card
  • Future employment in advanced sailing programs
Responsibilities
  • Assist instructors during lessons and dockside instruction
  • Help with rigging, derigging, and equipment organization
  • Support safe boat departures, returns, and on-water activities
  • Maintain clean and organized boats and dock areas
  • Follow safety protocols and assist with supervision
  • Serve as a positive and reliable role model
Important Notes
  • This is a volunteer (unpaid) position
  • CITs are assisting instructors and are equally responsible for children`s behavior and engagement in all activities.
  • Participation does not guarantee future employment, but strong candidates with leadership skills may advance into paid Assistant Instructor Position.
Eligibility & Requirements
  • Ages 13–18 (recommended 14–16; exceptions based on maturity and experience)
  • Completion of at least one intermediate or advanced course
  • Minimum 1 year of sailing experience with demonstrated basic skills
  • Instructor recommendation preferred
  • Must be registered for a DPYC camp session and attend the full week
  • Must attend a mandatory training session
  • Strong interest in sailing and desire in helping others
  • Positive attitude, responsibility, and ability to work with younger children
How to Apply
  1. Register for a DPYC Junior Sailing program by completing an application packet.
  2. Complete the CIT Program Application.
  3. Selected candidates will complete a 10-minute virtual or in person interview.
If a week you register for is full, your registration will not be processed and any payment made will be refunded.
